Malbec Day! (A Day Late...)

So how did I spend Malbec Day yesterday? Not how I wanted to: In bed, with food poisoning from what I suspect was a bad oyster the evening before.
Turns out, however, that the bottle I’d planned on opening yesterday is perfect for a recovery day. With its sweet, ripe fruit and generous caramel notes, this is a lovely way to re-hydrate, and a perfect way to get myself back into the world of the living.
Graffigna Centenario Malbec “Reserva” 2010 San Juan, Argentina
Pleasant, fruit-forward nose boasting bright aromas of warm strawberries, red plums, and something that reminds me of French toast--likely the oak still in the process of absorbing. On the palate, sappy cherry, blueberry compote, and blackberry mingles with caramel and butterscotch. Gulpable and giving, from the still-underappreciated San Juan, north of Mendoza. Great value, too.

  1. Hmmm, sounds nice - I typically only find that caramel in a bordeaux-blend. Available in PA?

  2. The caramel is an oak thing, not so much region-specific. Sadly, though, not in PA on state store shelves. Big surprise. Jersey and Delaware for sure. WineChateau.com has it for under $12.
